Dr. Leland Werden

Lead Scientist

Leland is a restoration ecologist who focuses on understanding and improving global conservation and restoration outcomes, developing innovative restoration approaches, and determining how to optimize finance flows towards restoration. He uses distributed networks of field experiments, statistical modeling, and broadly distributed surveys to not only advance basic ecological and restoration theory, but also to determine how to apply effective approaches at scale. His work has spanned ecosystems from the temperate forests of the Northeastern United States to the tropical wet and dry forests of Hawaii and Central and South America. Leland’s work has led to the development of tropical forest restoration best practices, and substantially advanced the understanding of how interactions between below- and belowground processes dictate forest restoration outcomes.
